Starting a design project? Whether it’s a new logo, a website refresh, or packaging for a product launch, proper preparation is the difference between “just okay” and something that really hits the mark.
Here’s how to set yourself and your designer up for success:
1. Know Your Goals
Before you even contact a designer, take a moment to define what you want to achieve. Are you building brand awareness? Driving more online sales? Launching a new product? Clear goals lead to focused design.
Ask yourself:
What’s the purpose of this project?
What problem is it solving?
How will success be measured?
2. Get Clear on Your Brand
If you already have a brand, pull together your logo, colours, fonts, tone of voice, and any existing materials. If you don’t, no stress, just think about how you want your brand to come across.
Consider:
Your mission and values
Your ideal customer
Competitors you like (or want to avoid looking like)
3. Pull Together Inspiration For Your Design Project
Moodboards are magic. Whether it’s a Pinterest board, a folder of screenshots, or just a few links, visual references help your designer understand your taste and expectations.
Think about:
Colours and typography you’re drawn to
Layout styles or visual textures you love
Brands that “feel right” to you
4. Define Your Content
Design isn’t just how it looks, it’s what it says too. Try to have a rough idea of what copy, images, or information you’ll need to include. Even placeholder content helps shape the project.
Gather:
Text (headlines, product info, pricing, etc.)
Logos or brand assets
Product photos or any other imagery
5. Set Your Budget and Timeline For Your Design Project
Be upfront with your designer about your budget and timeline. This helps us scope the project properly and offer solutions that fit your needs, without last-minute stress.
Tip: If you’re unsure about budget, most studios (like us!) are happy to offer tiered options and payment plans for bigger projects.
6. Trust the Process
Once the prep is done and the project kicks off, it’s time to trust your designer. Collaboration is key, but so is giving creative space. The best results come when
everyone is clear on expectations and open to ideas.
